After a Covid crazy 2020 season, things returned to “normal” for the 2021 campaign. Coach Herb Brogan’s Titans had a nice mix of returning players, skilled players, and new players. They would be tested early as defending Division 7 State Champion New Lothrup was first up on the calendar August 26. The Titans laid a good foundation for the year with a 27-14 win. The next three games were I-8 Conference games against Coldwater, Northwest, and Marshall, with Lumen being victorious in all three.
A tough two-week test awaited the Titans with road games against Hastings and Harper Creek. In a very close, hard-fought game the Titans edged Hastings 33-22 to move to 5-0. Unfortunately, homecoming at Beaver stadium would bring the first blemish to Lumen’s record, as the Titans fell to Harper Creek 33-14.
Lumen then closed with wins over two conference foes, Battle Creek Pennfield and Western, before going on the road and earning a nice victory over Dearborn Divine Child to wrap their regular season campaign with an 8-1 overall record, while tying for first in the I-8 Conference with Hastings and Harper Creek at 6-1.
The top-seeded Division 7 Titans drew the Detroit Leadership Academy for their Pre-District matchup, and played a great game rolling to a 42-6 win. That earned them a match-up with the Division 7 number 2 seed, Monroe St Mary Catholic. In a back and forth game, Lumen secured the District Title with a tough 21-12 victory. The Regional finals were next, and standing in the way was exceedingly athletic Detroit Loyola. Once again it was a back and forth game, at least early on, before Lumen pulled away and won 35-18.
The State Semi-Finals were next, and standing between the Titans and Ford Field were the Blue Devils of Lawton, and their multi-faceted offense, stellar defense and their all-everything tailback Jake Rueff who amassed over 2,500 all-purpose yards and led the State (maybe even the nation) in touchdowns with 48. It was a crazy game of huge plays, turnovers, and intense defense. Unfortunately, it would be a penalty against the Titans on a PAT with under a minute to go that allowed Lawton to change their mind and go for the 2-point conversion, which ultimately gave them the 21-20 win. It was an excellent year for Lumen football, finishing at 11-2 and making it to the State Semi-Finals.
Also, it was a first for Good Shepherd Catholic Radio as GSCR was the Titan Football Flagship, broadcasting every game of the 2021 campaign. Incorporating prayer at each quarter, as well as for injured players, exclusive halftime interview with Assistant Head Coach Sean Brogan, LC student Beat Reporters with recorded updates on other fall LC sports teams, a new, expanded audience was introduced to GSCR and its mission.
A special thanks to color commentator Ron Welch who broadcast alongside GB, as well as statistician Trey Richmond, Keith Tuller on the board, and Dan Kuras who made the programming possible. Looking forward to 2022. Go Titans!!!
